The 100 Greatest Debut Albums

Uncut's August edition is a "Special Issue" - says so right on the cover. The occasion is a "celebration of the debut", the record that introduces an artist to an audience. It says, "This is who I am. Love me or hate me. Just purchase my album so I can make another one that will likely disappoint you. Then I'll try to win you back with the third." (Some of that is probably mumbled)

Uncut has drafted an annotated list of what they feel are the 100 greatest debut albums in the history of rock. They've also compiled other lists, such as "10 Debuts You Hate to Love"). The debut shindig also includes related features like a short piece on "How to Make the Perfect Debut" by producer John Leckie, and debut-discussing interviews with Chrissie Hynde, and the Specials' Jerry Dammers, among others. Dammers also lists his five favorite first albums; he likes Bob Marley & the Wailer's Soul Rebels the most.

The 100 Greatest Debut Albums:

1. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico - "these poisonous tales of drug abuse ("Heroin", "I'm Waiting For The Man") and S&M sex ("Venus In Furs") were as dark as '60s rock got. All but ignored at the time - Rolling Stone didn't even bother with a review - its 171 placing on the Billboard chart belied its subsequent influence. Best track: 'Heroin'". In the mag., John Cale discusses the making of the album track-by-track.
2. Television - Marquee Moon
3. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced?
4. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
