When Did Rock Begin?
U.S. News & World Report disagrees with Rolling Stone's declaration that rock and roll began with Elvis Presley's "That's All Right", suggesting that "give or take a little", rock began with "Rocket 88",
"Rocket 88" was an R&B hit for Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, but arranged by Ike Turner. The sound was influenced by other artists, but to some it stands as the epitome of a perfect rock song, and it's a sound Presley imitated, for the first time when he recorded in the same studio where "Rocket 88" was recorded.
Rolling Stone's Anthony De Curtis says the "hijacking of R&B and turning it into something else... that's what rock-and-roll is. It's not fair or right. But for rock to become the phenomenon it did, it needed a white artist."
So did rock music begin with its popularity or its sound?
Jackie Brenston - Rocket 88 (available on the The Chess Story: 1947-1975 box set)
Elvis Presley - That's All Right (available on 2nd To None)
